CIMI – Brazil: Mura and Maraguá Indigenous Peoples: Defending Common Goods and Strengthening Food Sovereignty in the Municipalities of Careiro da Várzea, Autazes and Nova Olinda do Norte, region of the lower Madeira River – State of Amazonas (AM)
The Indigenous Missionary Council (CIMI) is an association mandated by the Brazilian Catholic Church. It supports Indigenous peoples in their struggle for survival, the protection of their territories, and the respect of their dignity. CIMI advocates for their fundamental rights and works to raise public awareness of their demands. It also contributes to the preservation of traditional knowledge, the revitalization of Indigenous cultural heritage, and the promotion of lifestyles in harmony with nature.
The CoRe II project
The CoRe II project aims to support the Mura and Maraguá peoples in defending their specific and distinct Indigenous rights, particularly the right to recognized and protected territories. It seeks to strengthen their living conditions in a dignified and sustainable manner, paying particular attention to the most vulnerable groups, through processes of training, coordination, deliberation, advocacy, political influence, and social mobilization, in order to guarantee the effective respect of their rights. The project directly benefits 650 people and indirectly benefits 5,100 people.
Planned activities
Annual participation in the Indigenous Women's March, a national mobilization organized by the National Articulation of Indigenous Women Warriors of Ancestry (ANMIGA)
Communication training and meetings for Indigenous youth
Training in agroecology
Support and guidance for local initiatives
Political and legal training, with legal support for Mura and Maraguá leaders in the defense of their territories
Support for Indigenous assemblies and for connecting leaders between different communities
Support for the advocacy processes of the Mura and Maraguá peoples with municipal, regional, national and international bodies (UN forums, partner universities, etc.)
