Tobacco and Soybeans reflections of land differentiation in agriculture in Southern Paraná, Brazil

Latin America

Agroecology / Land Rights

Rachel Amouroux et Héloïse Faivre AgroTechParis

What future for agroecology and food sovereignty in the Southern Paraná region of Brazil, marked by the expansion of systems based on cash crops?

The results of the study argue for greater regulation of access to land in order to control and restrict the phenomenon of land concentration which, on the one hand, pushes the largest landowners towards the massive production of soybeans and, on the other hand, the smallest landowners towards the production of tobacco, to the detriment of their food sovereignty.

These results also argue in favor of strengthening and securing local agricultural markets to encourage producers to diversify their production systems and even adopt agro-ecological practices.
