In the Bolivian Amazon, the peasant community of Jericó (Pando department) lives off its forest, and especially off the harvest of the Amazonian chestnut, also called Brazil nut.

But this forest has long been threatened by uncontrolled logging and overexploitation. To protect it, the community has adopted a comprehensive forest and land management plan (CFLMP), a set of regulations stricter than national standards.

With the support of CIPCA , its two leaders, Napoleon Chao Reico and José-Antonio Chao Montero, succeeded in getting it adopted and then respected by all families, even if it meant having to impose sanctions.

This document recounts how they proceeded, the compensation measures they devised, and the challenges that remain. It is based on lessons learned from the CIPCA's work with the support of CIEDEL.
