ACLO Chuquisaca - How did the community of El Palmar become a pioneer in ecotourism?

ACLO - CIEDEL - 2025

This capitalisation, carried out by ACLO with the support of CIEDEL , summarizes the experience of the community of El Palmar in Bolivia , and has become a reference in community ecotourism.

This document shows the central role of Don Juan Serrano, a self-taught local leader, who was able to convince the inhabitants to value their natural resources - palm forests, geological formations, endemic fauna - rather than exploit them.

It shows how a rural community, with the support of ACLO and SERNAP, has built step by step an organized, fair tourism offering rooted in environmental protection, and what challenges it still has to overcome to sustain this dynamic.
